Misunderstanding Cholesterol

We might think that we know all about the a-z of cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol, HDL (High Density Lipoproteins), LDL (Low Density Lipoproteins) the “bad” cholesterol, triglycerides, the healthy cholesterol levels and which kind of food to consume, good fats, bad fats etc. But why keeping a healthy cholesterol level is still so difficult? Where’s the mistake? What does go wrong?

Misunderstanding Cholesterol

Let’s check some more facts.

~ Age:
High cholesterol becomes more common as we age, nothing we can do about aging. We just have to concern more on our diet, lifestyle and weight.

~ Diet:
Being over weight means high cholesterol levels. Stick with fish, fruits, healthy fats, vegetables and whole grains. Watch the portions and count the calories to avoid a roller coaster weight management and high cholesterol levels.

We’re already limiting the intake of saturated fat and trans fat, the bad fats, which increase the cholesterol levels. Reducing the bad fats isn’t enough, we should increase consuming the healthy fats too. The monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats is needed to balancing our diet. Protein and nutrients are also important for our health.

We have enough healthy fats, nutrients and protein, but still having a high level cholesterol? How about alcohol and sugar? We also have to watch the calories on our diet, as the excess calories from alcohol and sugar become cholesterol. Calories can accumulate fast enough even with a healthy fats intake.

~ Diseases and genetics:
Extra care is necessary if we suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and family history of diabetes, stroke or heart diseases. Monitoring the cholesterol levels regularly since earlier age is recommended. Take extra medications if necessary and consume it on schedule as prescribed to gain the benefits. Check whether there are some medications which can’t be eaten at the same time with other foods, such as grapefruit.
